New Poor Farm Cemetery

HISTORIC TEXAS CEMETERY

The New Poor Farm Cemetery is the county cemetery which was opened in 1891 and closed in 1958. Althought it was fenced, there was only one marker in it until recently. It marked the grave of Anton Fabrygel, 21 Apr 1864-25 Nov 1937, who was born in Austria Bohemia. Jerry and Joann Fabrygel researched courthouse death records to learn the names of others buried there and applied for the Historic Texas Cemetery designation from the Texas Historical Commission. The names they found with birth and death years were placed on a new tombstone in which the Texas Historic Cemetery medallion is embedded. The Fabrygels keep the cemetery property maintained.

In his Lavaca County, Texas Cemeteries, Volume III, Sammy Tise referred to this cemetery as the County Poor Farm Cemetery.

The cemetery is located two miles south of Hallettsville and across the Lavaca River on South Main Street (County Road 1B). Go to the Willing Workers Cemetery on the right. Go through the gate of that cemetery and walk straight north to the back fence. Across the fence is the Willing Workers Black Cemetery. Across the road from both of these is another cemetery, the New County Farm Cemetery.
