Cemeteries of Lavaca County

This list of Lavaca County cemeteries is a work in progress. Many cemeteries are known by alternate names and those names are listed, too. Many of the cemeteries are linked to websites, cemetery listings, and/or photographs. Please contact Regena if you have information or a photograph you can add.

We are also compiling a list of tombstones that have been moved. See Displaced Markers.

Several people have volunteered to do cemetery lookups for you in Sammy Tise's Lavaca County Texas Cemetery Records, Volumes 1-VI. These books are also available for purchase.

For questions about cemeteries, including laws, how to clean stones, and guidelines for restoring cemeteries, see Preserving Texas Cemeteries, a Texas Historical Commission publication that's available online.

Do You Know?

Does anyone know the significance of the symbol at left which is on the tombstone of Joseph Alois Sommerlatte in the Hallettsville City Cemetery? Sommerlatte served as Lavaca County Clerk from 1912 - 1918 and County Judge from 1920-1922. When he died on Jan. 28, 1947, his death certificate gave his occupation as faith healer.

If you know the significance of this strange clock, please e-mail Brenda Fisseler at the Friench Simpson Library in Hallettsville.
