I was reading a genealogy book a couple of weeks ago, and one of my far-distant cousins was suppose to end up with his "wagon train" and stopped in an area and told his family "This is it, "our Sweet Home"!!" thus naming the name of the town Sweet Home about the 1830's. The book said the TOLBERT family was also with the group in Sweet Home. I personally know some Tolbert's in Yoakum, I am assumming they are descendents, I also know the Hermes family in Sweet Home. I always thought that county was German heritage, not Great Britain.1st. Question: According to Lavaca history, who founded Sweet Home??? 2nd Question: In the 1840's-1860's were ferries used to cross the Navidad river in the northern area around Borden/Weimer area, etc.?? Where was the crossing that was used in route to San Filepe when Sam Houston was enroute to Groce Plantation in March, 1836??? Did the trail cross Lavaca county or Fayette County? 3rd Question: My ggggrandfather was a ferryman in the 1850 Census in Colorado County, but, they apparently lived on the Colorado/Lavaca County line. Does Lavaca have any cemeteries in that area? -- Jeannine

I'm interested in finding any information concerning REED, Ezekiel Fenwick from Tishomingo County, MS to Fayette County, TX, then to Lavaca County, TX circa 1850-1860. Son: REED, Levi A., Son: Reed Luther J.. There are several other family members. It appears that when Fayette County broke off to become Lavaca County - they were part of it. I will share the information I have. I have some of the later census records showing them in Lavaca County and Lampasas County, TX. They were also part of the Mahan family. Ezekiel was married to Tabitha Jane Mahan. Some of her family, including her father (Isaac Mahan) most likely came with the Reeds or visa versa. Both families came from Tishomingo County, MS about the same time. Don Patrick, Copperas Cove, TX

I am searching for information on a Thomas L. UPCHURCH who married Cora Bell KELLY Jun 8 1889. On the 1900 Lavaca Co census where they are listed there is a son Thomas Upchurch listed as 2/12, I assume he is 2 months old. Thomas Sr was b Sep 1 1857 Lavaca Co d Apr 14 1915 Lavaca Co. Cora Kelly was his 2nd wife. He lst m Catherine PETERSON Jan 3 1878. All I can assume is she died. Cora Kelly had previously been married lst to John Wesley SMOTHERS and he died Oct 1894. [They are my g grandparents]. I recently discovered she had married for a 2nd time, although I remember as a young girl, my grandmother talking abt the Upchurch's, I just did not realize we have Upchurch relatives. I believe acc/to some data from a Lavaca Co Library, that Thomas Sr had a son Loyd b Oct 28 1884 d Apr 1902 & is buried Salem Cem Lavaca Co Tx. This must be a son of him and his lst wife Catherine Peterson. I also have another notation that mentions children of Cora Kelly & Thomas Sr were Tommy, Carl & Ferrell but I do not have any info on Carl or Ferrell to say for sure they were Cora Kelly's sons. I do not know when Thomas Jr d or if he married. Cora Kelly was b Nov 6 1865 and d May 15 1946. She was the dau/o Robert Kelly b 1814 MS and Deliah Oldham b 1819 MS. Cora was b in MS. Any leads or information to piece this Cora and Thomas Upchurch family together is greatly appreciated. I would like to know if there are living Upchurch's out there. Thank you kindly, NSmothers-Cook

I am searching for any leads or information on an Eliza DABNEY that gave a Deposition in an 1844 probate case for Mary H ASHBY [SMEATHERS/SMOTHERS] when she filed for divorce from John B Smeathers sr. This was noted as Case #2 Cause #180 in Gonzales Co Tx District Court filed Nov 14 1844. In Eliza Dabney's deposition on Mary Ashby [Smeathers] she states that she [Eliza] is a midwife and she delivered an illegitimate son to Mary Ashby 1833 name Charles Ashby, 3 yrs bef Mary Ashby married John Smeathers Sr in 1836. I found the marriage below of this Dabney on the Lavaca Co marriage postings. I was curious if this Henry Dabney might be related to Eliza Dabney of the 1844 deposition. She spelled her name as Eliza...maybe it was Elizabeth. Any leads or information would be appreciated. Mary Ashby lived in Lavaca Co in 1844 as did John Smeathers Sr, and I assume this Eliza Dabney, as Eliza states in the deposition that she has known both people since before they were married, meaning 1836 in Lavaca Co Tx. thank you kindly. I am trying to find my great, great GREGORY grandparents as well as great grandparents. I also need information on my grandfather, as well. I know he is buried in Salem Cemetery near Ezell but that is about all I know about him. He died at age 35, I believe. My Grandmother was born in the vicinity of Hallettsville, I think, and she was one of the children. Her name was Cornelia Leggett. My Great Grandmother, Sally Vanessa COOPER JONES died in Lavaca County (Yoakum) in about 1917. Her husband was Milton Carmen Jones. If you have any information on them, I would appreciate it. Also, on my father's side, my gg grand father Charles P. CHAMBERS (39 NC) in the 1850 Lavaca Census was married to Matilda (should be Marilda Mims I think) (23 Al). Charles P. Chambers was an assistant Marshall in Gonzales County in the 1850s and a Constable in Lavaca County in the 1850s. He's buried in an unmarked grave in Providence Cemetery. I would love to find out more aabout him. I can trace the Mims back to 1623 Virginia, but Charles P. Chambers is as far as I can go. If you could find out his middle name or even parents. also, there were several big trials with him involved. I believe he was murdered. His wife, Marilda married a Mc GATHEY (or McGahe) on January 23, 1862. McGathy was shot in the back in Halletsville on March 18, 1864. He and Marilda had a daughter Alice. I really would like to know Charles P. Chambers' roots. A cousin of mine found one of his elections ballots. Thank you, Brenda L. Chambers, Fort Worth, Texas 76107

I would like to learn more of the descendants of Mrs. J. N. Way who was living near Hackberry in the northern part of Lavaca County, Texas according to the 1880 United States Census. Mrs. J. N. Way was 25 years old, married, and had a four-year-old daughter, Betty Way. Mrs. Way was living in the home of her sister and brother-in-law, R. L. MARTIN. I believe that Mrs. J. N. Way was the first wife of Henry Burr Way, who was the older brother of William Mitchell Way, my grandfather. Henry Burr Way was born in 1856 in Wilcox County, Alabama. He was bushwhacked and killed in Caldwell County in 1891, before April 4, 1891. For several years I have been doing research on the Way family. I have traced them back to Henry Way born 1583 in Bridport, England who went to Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. I have traced the Way family back further to British Kings William the Conqueror and Alfred the Great. I would like to share this information with the descendants of Mrs. J. N. Way.
