Willow Creek Cemetery

LAVACA COUNTY, TEXAS

The Willow Creek Cemetery is over 100 years old. It is well-kept and fenced. The Willow Creek Black Cemetery adjoins it, separated by a chain link fence. There are 354 markers in this section of the cemetery as of Oct. 13, 2003. The oldest marker is for Delbert Judd, who died September 16, 1858. The cemetery was surveyed by Norma Casey on Oct. 13 & 27, 2003.

There are many unmarked graves in this section of the cemetery. Some graves are simply marked with a field stone. The grave markers are made from rock, wood, limestone, and granite. Some of the markers have eroded and can no longer be read. Some of them are broken. Norma has used the spellings that are on the headstones.

From Hallettsville travel east on Hwy 90 A to Sublime. Turn right on FM 3283 in Sublime. The cemetery is about 5.1 miles down this road on the right hand side of the road.

Norma has tried to show who is buried beside whom for the sake of genealogy: family members, husbands, wives, etc. The words "double stone" are listed by the first name on the stone. The name that follows shares that stone. On some of the double headstones the wife's maiden name is listed.

Below Norma's survey is a list of some of the old unmarked graves at Willow Creek, provided by Regena Williamson. The list was made about 1965 by G. P. Wenckens, Frank Sieber, Bill Hartt, Bowie Kelly and several other residents of Vienna. Some of these now have markers. Ben Woods is mentioned in the list as being the first person buried in Willow Creek Cemetery, some time before 1858.

See pictures taken of the headstones and submitted to the Texas Tombstone Project, TXGENWEB Lavaca County.

A printed copy of the survey and pictures can also be found the Friench Simpson Memorial Library in Hallettsville, Texas. Please report any corrections or additions.
