Halletsville, Aug. 28. —A sad accident occurred to Nathan Dailey yesterday. He was delivering oil for the Waters Pierce Oil  company through the country about seven miles from the city. He was quite weak, having been a sufferer from Bright’s disease for some time, and in getting on his wagon he missed his footing and fell on the tongue of the wagon just behind the team, which startled, throwing him under the front wheels. ANNA BEIER DERRICH

Shiner Gazette, 8 Jan 1942, page 1

Mrs. Anna Derrich Goes To Her Reward

As quietly as she had lived, Mrs. Anna Derrich expired, giving her soul into the keeping of her Divine Savior whom she worshipped and served faithfully all of her long and useful life. The end came Sunday, Jan. 4, at 11 p. m. Surrounded by her loving husband and children and fortified by the last Sacraments of Holy Mother the Church, Mrs. Derrich passed into everlasting rest and peace where pain and sorrow is no more. She had attained the ripe old age of 80 years, 5 months and 11 days.

Mrs. Derrich had been ill for several years, during which time she was nursed with the tenderest of care by her children and a granddaughter who was reared in the home. Her presence in the home will be sorely missed by the children and especially by her aged husband, who is now bereft of a faithful life companion of more than three score years. She was one of the finest Christian women in this city, a devoted wife and perfect mother who taught her children to be devout christians [sic] and respected and beloved citizens. Everyone agrees that she did her task well. She counted her friends by her acquaintances, for to know her was to love her.

The deceased (nee Anna Beier) was born in Bernhau, Germany, July 23, 1861. In October, 1880, she was married there to Joseph Derrich. On June 3, 1881, the couple came to America and settled in Flatonia, Fayette county. From there they moved to Lavaca county, then to Gonzales county, and then back to Lavaca county. For the past 17 years the family resided here in town.

Mrs. Derrich was forced to face the many hardships and disappointments that were the lot of all the early settlers, but her faith and patience never wavered. Life meant much to her and held much for her, and to those she loved best she has left a rich legacy of a life well lived.

The funeral of this good lady was held Wednesday morning from the family home at 9:15 o’clock to the Shiner Catholic church for Requiem High Mass. Interment was made in the Shiner Catholic cemetery. Mons. Netardus said Mass and delivered a comforting sermon in English and Rev. E. Bily officiated at the grave.

Pall-bearers were Edwin Derrich, Edwin Kresta, Reinhod [sic] Anderle, Raymond Machart, Laddie Stavinoha and Joe Nagelmueller.

Survivors are the following: her husband; three sons, Joe of Shiner, Frank of El Campo, and Peter of Oak Grove; 5 daughters, Misses Annie, Mary, Emma and Martha and Mrs. Antonia Nagelmueller; one sister, Mrs. Frances Damal of Germany. One daughter, three sisters, two brothers and one half-brother, preceded her in death.

Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved ones, commending them to the God she loved so dearly while here upon earth.

News Special: Halletsville.Tex, September 11.—A pistol shot and the screams of a woman this morning about 9 o'clock drew a crowd to the residence occupied by Mr. D. M. Dodd. There, on a bed, lay the lifeless body of D. M. Dodd, who had fired a ball from a pistol into his left breast and died almost immediately. He got up this morning in, ate his breakfast and went to town, got a shave and returned home, People he passed on the street noticed nothing unusual about him and nothing he did, attracted his wife's attention, she being busy with her house work, until she heard the shot, where-upon she ran into the room. He was a middle aged man and had been here about a year as cotton buyer for Slayden, Clarkson & Robards, of San Antonio, and was liked by all who knew him, as he was one of those jovial men who had a pleasant word for everybody. No reason is known for his act except that he had been drinking considerable and had repeatedly told parties that he would quit that day, only to drink the next, and it is supposed that he concluded he could not quit, although he did not drink to intoxication. In his coat pocket was found a note, as follows:

"Dear Wife: I think it is more honorable to die than to live the life I am living. Wire F. M. to come, and I would rather be buried at Gonzales. I love you, Jennie, for I think you are a noble woman, Good bye."

The "F. M." referred to is a son residing at Waelder. Another grown son resided here with his father. Both are children by a former wife. His present wife has no children.

Shiner Veteran Meets Tragic Death

Seldom did Shiner so sad a death see as was that of Alphonse Dolezal Tuesday. Tragic was the sight especially of his young wife of 14 months, crushed with grief. For it was a cruel blow which fell so suddenly for his beloved.

What the Shiner veteran escaped on the battlefield he met on the home field. While plowing Monday with a tractor he was also shooting doves. His father nearby heard a shot, then saw the tractor moving on and his son was on the ground. He found him mortally wounded in the side. Somehow the gun was accidentally discharged.

All human help proved in vain and the young veteran died at Wagner Clinic conscious almost to his last breath.

So crushing was this sudden blow to his young wife that she had to be placed under a nurse's care. It was almost impossible to part her from the grave that received her beloved one.

There are also the grief stricken parents Mr. and Mrs. John Dolezal, one younger brother and two sisters. Rev Moczygemba and Hoffman officiated. Fellow veterans paid their last respects with Taps echoing memories of the war.

Plane Crash Fatal to Two Austinites

Emmett Adolph Dreyer, instructor at Ragsdale Flying School, and his daughter, Patricia Ann, 16, were killed instantly Friday morning when their plane crashed into a field near the Hornberger Dairy Farm two and a half miles east of the Municipal Airport.

August R. Carlson, dairy farm employe [sic] who was eyewitness to the accident, said the crash occurred at 9:30 a. m. He told investigating officers from the sheriff's department that he first noticed the BT13 training plane when it seemed to be having motor trouble at about a height of 200 feet.

He said the plane came across the field at an angle, traveling from east to west. The motor suddenly quit and the plane lost altitude, struck a tree and nosed into the field.

The plane was badly mangled and both occupants dead when Carlson and Paul Hornsberger reached the scene, officers reported.

In piecing together the evidence, airport officials thought the airplane stalled in from between 25 and 50 feet. There was a good field about 100 yards from where Dreyer crashed. The field is deeply rutted, with a gully running through its middle where the crash occurred.

It could have been that he was trying to stretch his glide to avoid the deep gully, and in turning to the left let the plane drop out from under him.

Dreyer bought the airplane about three or four months ago. It was an Army surplus job and had been sitting out on the airport in the weather.

The plane belonged to Dreyer personally and, according to Bobby Ragsdale of the Ragsdale Flying Service, Dreyer had checked the plane several days previous. However, due to weather, water could have gotten into the carburetor, causing the engine to quit.

Dreyer had lots of experience in light airplanes, but had only flown the BT five or six times, pilots at the airport said.

Investigating officers were Jim McCoy, George Pope, and Henry Kluge of the sheriff's department.

The bodies were taken to the Wilke Funeral Home. Funeral services were tentatively planned at Shiner, Texas.

Air Victims' Rites Today

Funeral service for Emmett Adolph Dreyer and his daughter, Patricia Ann, victims of a plane crash Friday morning, will be held at 4 p. m. Saturday in Shiner.

The father and daughter were killed instantly at 9:30 a. m. Friday when a privately owned BT13 trainer plane crashed two and a half miles east of the Municipal Airport.

Dreyer, 39, flight instructor for Ragsdale Flying School who had recently been appointed CAA flight examiner, purchased the army surplus plane four months ago and kept it staked out near the north side hangar, now crowded past capacity with between 15 and 18 planes. Approximately the same nmber [sic] of planes are staked out.

The flier and his 13-year-old daughter took off from the Ragsdale Field shortly before 9:30 a. m. on a trip to Shiner where they planned to visit relatives and return Friday afternoon.

In what witnesses said was an emergency landing attempt, the plane crashed into a field near the Hornsberger Dairy Farm when the engine failed at a low altitude.

Patricia Ann Dreyer was a student in St. Mary's Academy and was her father's frequent flying companion. The family moved to Austin four years ago from San Antonio where Dreyer was flight instructor for the United Aero Corporation.

Survivors include the wife and mother, Mrs. Isolde Dreyer, 3004 North Guadalupe; his mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Manchen of Shiner; one sister, Mrs. Jesse Starke, Yoakum; and one step brother, David Manchen, stationed in Italy.

Emmett Dreyer was born Emmett Schoenvogel but took his mother’s maiden name following his parents’ divorce. Contributed by Matt Cross

Mrs. Helen Dunn Taken In Death

Death has claimed a good woman who, although she had been away from Yoakum for many years, was still well-remembered and held high in the esteem of many in this city. LEWIS DUNN

Shiner Gazette, 1 Jul 1909

In Memory of Little Lewis Dunn.

It is with profound sorrow and heartfelt sympathy that we are called upon to chronicle the death of our beloved little friend, Lewis Dunn, who departed this life June 26, 1909, at Center Point, Texas.

His fond parents had taken him to said place, thinking that the change might benefit him, as all that medical aid could do for him was done, and although the little sufferer had almost been an invalid for six years, he bore his cross as bravely as could possibly be, and now as he sits upon the golden throne with our Heavenly Father, he smiles that sweet smile and sleep that knows no wakeing [sic].

The funeral took place at Shiner from the home of his heart broken parents, his remains having been brought over on a special train from Yoakum, and laid most tenderly to rest in the city cemetery. Many were the beautiful floral offerings sent in by friends and relatives, and the little grave was soon made into a pretty mound of flowers.

To the heartbroken father, mother, sister and brother, we wish to say, do not wish him back, for his is such a sweet and peaceful sleep that needs no grief, for he is waiting for you on that beautiful shore where sorrows are never known, and he will be ready to meet you when you cross over the sea of death, to lead you to that heavenly light that shines evermore.

To parents and loved ones we extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy, in this their hour of grief, and may Almighty God help them to bear their cross which He has sent them most patiently, so that they can meet their darling in heaven.

A rosebud that once had budded here below,
Has faded and from us has gone,
To bloom in heaven eternally,
And sing our Father’s songs.

We’ll miss you, sweet and dearest one,
Our lonely home is stilled:
Oh, how we treasure Him above,
Who our sad hearts with love doth fill.

He’ll have no sorrows, pains or toils,
Of life’s sad wayward journeys,
But sits upon our Saviour’s knee,
Waiting for his loved ones there, he’s yearning.

Then meet us, Lewis, our darling one,
When our toils and tasks we’ve finished,
And oh, how sweet for us ‘twill be,
To know that we’ll ne’er part from there.

To you, dear ones, whose hearts are broken,
To fond parents, sister and brother,
Let us say to you weep not for him,
For his rest is sweet and he knows no other.

Time alone your sad hearts can heal,
Dear friends, we know your heart is heavy;
Buy why should we wish him to come from the skies,
When he seems to look down to us and smile.

A place in your home ne’er can be filled,
The light of your lives seem to grow dim;
But God doeth all things well,
And I am sure he meant well for him.

“Suffer little children to come to me,” Christ said,
For I giveth and taketh as well;
Oh, Lewis, we know just how happily
You with Jesus in heaven must dwell.

A SINCERE FRIEND.

Card of Thanks.

We wish to thank our dear friends for the many kindnesses shown us during our recent bereavement. Shiner and her people always had a warm spot in our hearts. It is a spot no longer, it covers the whole heart. It was Lewis’ wish to come back to Shiner and play with his little friends, time and again, but it was not to be. He is happy now.

Sincerely,

A. B. DUNN AND FAMILY.

OAKLAND - COUNTY LINE NEWS

It is with sadness that I chronicle the deaths of two of our esteemed and beloved young people, whose deaths occurred in our midst Thursday night, just twenty-five minutes apart. One at the Duffner Hospital and one at Renger Hospital in Hallettsville. Felix Dusek died at the Renger Hospital Thursday night. Viola Melner also died Thursday night. These young people were born and reared here and had endeared themselves to the hearts of all who knew them, by their kind and loving ways. But God needed more angels to his band. He touched their eyes and they slept, and passed over the river to that beautiful land from which no human traveler ever returns. It is indeed sad to be taken so young and in the midst of life. They leave to mourn their untimely death their parents, sisters, brothers, and a host of relatives and friends. A double funeral service was held Saturday morning at the Svetin Church at 8 o'clock. Interment took place at the Svetin Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, attesting the popularity and esteem in which these young people were held.

JOHN P. DYER

Halletsvile Herald, 8 Dec 1892

In Memoriam.

At 6 o'clock, Thursday, November 17, 1892, the soul of Captain John P. Dyer was loosed from its earthly moorings to be wafted to Heavenly shores.

Not a man of this community had more friends, no one more deserving of those friends. He was born in Blount county, East Tennessee, March 21, 1826, thereby making his age at the time of death 66 years. There survive him, wife and five children, one brother, Mr. Hugh Dyer, Hope, and; three sisters, Mrs. Harriet Rose, Cuero, Mrs. N. J. Mudd, Sweet Home, and Mrs. Mary May, Cleveland, Tenn.

He had been a resident of Lavaca County for twenty-five years. His was a christian life, having united with the Methodist church at the age of eighteen years. During the late war Mr. Dyer was mail contractor, having charge of the route from Columbus to Victoria. As to being a man, he possessed all the attributes that go to make true manhood and being Southern born, his bearing was characterized by that old chivalric spirit of ante-bellum days.

The sorrowing familly have God's consolations, which are not as men's, mere soothers of the troubled mind, but seeds of positive and independent joy. "If a soldier in the ranks is wounded it is one thing to apply soothing cataplasms to stay the pain, but it is a grander thing for his general to come and bestow upon him the title, rank and insignia of a high officer." So with God's title and pledges.

"Is there no resting place,
From sorrow, sin and death,
Is there no happy spot
Where mortals may be blessed?
Where grief may find a balm
And weariness a rest?
Faith, hope and love best boons to imortal given
Waved their bright wings and whispered
Yes, yes, in Heaven!"

REYBAND.
