Moulton Man Killed When Hit by Train

George L. Hajek, 38 year old Moulton farm laborer, was run over and fatally injured by a train at 12:35 am Wednesday.

Hajek was laying on the track when the accident occurred about one quarter mile north of the Moulton city limits.  The engineer of the Southern Pacific Extra 3500, W.E. Armitage, said he did not see Hajek, who was laying long ways on the track, in time to stop the train which was going towards Flatonia.  The train stopped about 75 yards from the scene of the accident.  It was believed he was dragged about 100 feet by the train since one of his shoes was found that distance from where he was.

It is believed that he was on his way home about half way between Moulton and Flatonia and probably had gone to sleep on the track.

Justice of the Peace W. H. Holt of Moulton ruled the death accidental.  Funeral Services were held at 2 pm Thursday at Smith Funeral Home in Moulton, burial in Moulton Catholic Cemetery.

DAVID WILLIAM HALATA

Victoria Advocate, 8 August 2011

MORAVIA - David William Halata Sr., 58, of Moravia, passed away on Aug. 5, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 27, 1953, in Houston. David was one of eight children born to Bernard and Dorothy Halata of Houston. David graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Houston in May 1971. He married Diane Dornak of Houston on Oct. 1, 1977, and the two made their home in Moravia.

David was a member of Ascension of Our Lord Parish in Moravia, where he was a member of the KJT. He also served on the Knights of Columbus Council #2433 where he held many offices including Grand Knight and District Deputy. David joined the Fourth Degree Knights with all of his brothers in 1987. David played a vital part in organizing the Knights of Columbus Softball Teams that still compete at the State Tournament in Austin. He, himself, was part of three State Championship teams. He was active with the Hallettsville Little League from 1988-2005. One of his favorite memories was helping coach his son, David Jr., in the Little League State Tournament in 1991. David also served on the Sacred Heart Catholic School Advisory Council and was a member of the Sacred Heart Booster Club.

Through all of David's endeavors, he always had is family, especially his wife Diane, by his side. Diane was a rock for David, not only during the busiest times of his life, but when his treatments took their toll, and his pain became too much to bare she became his strength and comfort.

David and Diane were blessed with four children, David Jr. and wife Christina, Dale and wife Miranda, Deann and husband Chris, and Daniel, who will start college in the fall. Life got even better when God blessed him with several grandchildren that quickly became the apples of his eye - Grace, Alaina, Kendall, Caitlynn, William, and Adam.

David's greatest joys in life were watching his four children compete in sports where he was their biggest fan. He would always make them out to be the star players. He may have never coached his daughter, Deann, but he learned to love the game of tennis as she did. Between all of his jobs and volunteer time he never missed anyone of his children's games, no matter where the destination. He was so dedicated to his family that even during his treatments he still managed to go to all of his youngest son, Daniel's, games no matter how difficult it was for him. He enjoyed spending time with his children whether it was camping or fishing, which are some of his son, Dale's, favorite hobbies also. David also enjoyed spinning Diane around the dance floor.

He truly loved his family and his family loved him. The proof was in his hospital room where numerous family members surrounded his bed as the good Lord wrapped his arms around him and carried him home.

David is survived by his wife, Diane Halata; mother, Dorothy Halata; children, David Halata Jr. and wife Christina, Dale Halata and wife Miranda, Deann Rodgers and husband Chris, and Daniel Halata; four brothers, Michael Halata and wife Linda, Richard Halata and wife Celeste, Thomas Halata Sr., and Mark Halata and wife Cathy; three sisters, Mary Wiseman and husband Walt, Regina Rayner and husband Dudley, and Theresa Berger and husband Bruce; and six grandchildren, Grace Halata, Alaina Halata, Kendall Rodgers, Caitlynn Halata, William Halata, and Adam Halata.

MRS. JOHN J. HALL

Nov 1900 newspaper clipping

In Memoriam

Another soul has winged its way to God who gave it life. Something vast and incomprehensible -- something from which ourselves proceed and to which they return to Life's Fountain Head, to Him who giveth and receiveth until Himself again. Oh joy to the earth-wearied soul to hear now the welcome words of a sweet reception into the land of love and from the lips of her Savior to hear the approving: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant enter thou ---."

Mrs. John J. Hall, 69 years of age, died at her home at Hopewell, November 8, 1900. Her death was caused by consumption of which disease she had been a victim for many years. She had a hemmorage from the lungs Friday evening, November 2 and continued daily to have one of more until the time of her death, which took place Thursday morning about 11 o'clock. She fell asleep without a struggle, just as she had always wished to do. All was calm and peaceful with her for she did not fear death. Her body was interred in the Willow creek, cemetery on Friday morning, November 9, at 11 o'clock.

Mrs. Hall, whose name was Ailcy Broadstreet, was born in the northern part of Alabama on the 17th of May, 1831. She was the seventh child of a family of nine children. At the age of 8 years she went with the family to Mississippi. On April 7, 1853, she was married to Mr. John J. Hall. Four children blessed their union. They came to Texas in 1859, since which time Mrs. Hall resided in the vicinity of Hopewell, four miles south of Sublime, until her death. Her husband died March 20, 1870. Mrs. Hall joined the Baptist church some time during the civil war. She lived a quiet Christian life, gave good advice and did all the good she could. She was loved her all who knew her and leaves three children and a large number of friends to mourn her departure.

We extend sympathy and love to the bereaved one and hope they may be among those whom ??? world she awaits their coming. And when they have all answered to the beckoning call there will be a blissful reunion in the realms of everlasting day where Jesus is a friend and a brother death.

May me whene'er the death angel may call,
Be ready-to-go- each of us and all.
'Tis hard to break the tender cord,
When love has bound the heart,
'Tis hard, so hard to speak the words,
Must we forever part?
Dearest loved one we have laid thee
In the peaceful grave's embrace,
But thy-memory will be cherished
"Till we see they heavenly face.

We miss thee from our home, dear,
We miss thee from thy place,
A shadow o'er out life is cast,
We miss the sunshine of they face.
We miss they kind and willing hand,
Thy fond and earnest care,
Our home is dark without thee--
We miss thee everywhere.

Call not the dear departed,
Anchored safe where storms are o'er,
On the border land we left them,
Soon to meet and part no more.
Far beyond this world of changes,
Far beyond this world of care,
We shall find our missing loved one,
In our Father's mansion fair.

One by one earth's ties are broken,
As we see out love decay;
And the hopes so fondly cherished,
Brightened by to pass away.
One by one our hopes grow brighter,
As we near the shining shore;
For we know across the river
Wait the loved ones gone before.

Jesus while our hearts are bleeding,
O'er the spoils that death has won,
We would at this solemn meeting
Calmly say, – "Thy will be done."
Though cast down, we're not forsaken
Though afflicted, not alone,
Thou didst give and Thou hast taken,
Blessed Lord, "Thy will be done."

JOSEPH HALLOCK

Halletsville Herald
18 Jun 1891

MURDER OR SUICIDE?

Joseph Hallock Killed Near Moravia Saturday Night.

Joseph Hallock, aged 32, a Bohemian, was killed at his home one mile north of Moravia, abou 11 o'clock on Saturday night last.

From Esquire Gleckler, who held an inquest over the remains, THE HERALD obtained the following particulars:

About the hour, named Hallock heard a disturbance among his poultry. Supposing he had received a visit from a chicken thief he armed himself with two weapons, one a musket with a pistol handle, and went out to investigage. Presently a shot was heard, followed in quick succession by two others. After the shooting an investigation of the ground discovered the body of Hallock lying prostrate only a short distance from the house. Life was extinct. A gaping wound in the back of the head exposed the brains to view. The neck was powder-burned. Lying a few feet on each side of him were the two guns above mentioned. Those who first reached the body saw no enemy, nor was there the slightest trace of any one.

A difference of opinion exists as to whether it is a case of murder or suicide. The deceased was known as a quiet, peaceable man, and was not known to have an enemy. Besides the ground was wet and would have betrayed the presence of his murderer, either afoot or on horseback. On the other hand the incident that led to his leaving the house, the locality of the fatal wound and other cirrcumstances point to the probability of murder.

JOHN R. HARRIS

Weimar Mercury, July 2, 1904, page 3

Oakland News

It is with a sad heart that I write of the death of my dear father, Prof. J. R. Harris, which sad event occurred at his home here in Oakland, on the 20th day of June at 2:30 a. m.  To say his death was a shock to his children would feebly express their feelings, for we can hardly realize yet he is dead. On the morning he was taken sick he arose early,  as was his usual custom, and attended to the chores about the lot, after which he ate breakfast and went to the lot again to see about his stock, and was returning to the house when he was stricken down with apoplexy, where he was soon afterwards found leaning on the fence unable to rise. A doctor was immediately summoned, and all that medical aid and loving children could do was done for his recovery, but all to no avail. The good Master had called him and he had answered the summons with a smile of peace and love born of Heaven. As we gazed on the dear face for the last time on this earth, with such a look of peace, we truly feel our lost was Heaven’s gain, and that he is now walking the realms of glory with Jesus and Mother and other loved ones gone before. Prof. Harris was born in Raleigh, N. C., September 22, 1835. He was educated at Oxford, Mississippi, where he was graduated with honors. He was a Confederate Soldier and served several years as lieutenant in Virginia, after which he came to Texas in 1864, and took up school teaching for a livelihood. Right after the war he was happily married to Miss Mary Carden of Gatesville and moved to Colorado County, where he resided up until the time of his death. He united with the Baptist Church when quite a young man, and for forty years he has been an earnest worker in the Master’s vineyard. His friends were many and his life was one worthy imitation. He leaves five children to mourn his loss—Mesdames Gertrude Payne and Willie Martin of Bay City, Mrs. I. A Strunk, Mrs. Ruth Calhoun, and Miss Bertha Harris of Oakland.

Harris was buried in the Andrews Chapel Cemetery. Obituary transcribed by Sharon Sutton.

MARY J. CARDEN HARRIS

Weimar Mercury, April 5, 1902

Oakland Items

The relatives and friends of Mrs. M. J. Harris were sadly disappointed last Sunday by the non-appearance of Rev. Bracewell, as he was announced to preach Mrs. Harris' funeral. The church was beautifully decorated for the special service and a good many from the country vicinity came in Sunday to be present at said services and Sunday night an immense crowd from Hackberry came over to preaching, but no preacher came.  Fortunately, the Rev. Q. T. Simpson came down from Weimar Monday and preached that night and as the Rev. Bracewell failed to put in his appearance, Rev. Simpson preached Mrs. Harris' funeral by special request.  The singing rendered by the choir, and Mrs. W. C. Bouldin as organist was excellent and very appropriate for the occasion. The many friends of Rev. Simpson were very glad to have him with them again, and his preaching was highly enjoyed and appreciated by all.

Mrs. Gertrude Payne and little daughter, Miss Susie, after spending a week with relatives here, returned home Tuesday. She came to be present at the memorial services of her mother, Mrs. Harris.

Mary J. Harris (5 Feb 1849 -7 Jan 1902) was buried in Andrews Chapel Cemetery.

Weimar Mercury, 10 Dec 1920

MR. AUG. HASSE DEAD.

Former Citizen of This Section Dies at Halletsville Home Last Week.

The entire community is in mourning over the death of one of our most beloved fellow citizens, Mr. August Hasse, who died Wednesday at 3:10 p. m., after being very sick of pneumonia, for only a few days, he being in bed since Sunday. The funeral occurs this (Friday) morning at 10 o’clock from the residence of the deceased, with interment in the city cemetery, Rev. M. Heinrich, of the Lutheran church to officiate.

Mr. Hasse was a quiet, unassuming man, devoted to his wife, and made friends by his acquaintance. He will be sadly missed by all.

Mr. Aug. Hasse, aged 66 years and 15 days, was born in Biegel Settlement, Fayette county, Texas. In 1866 he settled in Colorado county, and in the year 1890 with his good wife came to Lavaca county, settling at Breslau, where he engaged in farming. Twenty years ago while on a deer hunt with others in the lower part of Lavaca county, one of his companions seriously shot him, mistaking Mr. Hasse for a deer, as he was moving among the brush. As a result of this accident Mr. Hasse lost of the use of his left lung and had never been able to do hard work since. He gave up farming and came to Halletsville nineteen years ago and engaged in odd jobs of furniture repair and also light carpenter work. He is survived by his heart-broken widow of here, to whom he was married in 1884 in Colorado county, her maiden name being Mrs. Emilie Mehrens. Other near relatives surviving are three brothers and five sisters, as follows: Adolph Hasse of Floresville, Charles and Herman Hasse of Winters, Runnels county; Mrs. Hy. Hoegemeyer of near Yoakum; Mrs. Wm. H. Striebeck of Floresville, Mrs. August Gerstenberg of Belton; Mrs. Henry Emken and Miss Marie Hasse of Tulare, California.

DR. V. R. HAVENS

Weimar Mercury, 26 Oct 1928, page 1

Unfortunate Tragedy at Oakland Saturday

News reached here late Saturday afternoon of an unfortunate tragedy that had just been enacted at Oakland.

In an altercation between Dr. V. R. Havens, physician at Oakland, and Home Reaves, farmer and stockman living between Oakland and Sublime, Dr. Havens was stabbed so badly that he died a few hours later in a hospital at Halletsville, to which point he was rushed after being attended to by Dr. L. J. Peter of Schulenburg, who advised such step.

Effort was made to secure a physician from Weimar immediately after the cutting took place, but as it happened both local physicians were out of the city, we are told, and Dr. Peter was then summoned. He did what he could for the wounded man, but realizing the desperateness of the situation, advised that the injured man be taken to a hospital as quickly as possible. This was done, but Dr. Havens succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight.

Particulars of the tragedy are meager and unauthentic. From best evidence at hand it would seem that Dr. Havens and a young man named Marek were discussing an account owed by Marek to Dr. Havens, when Mr. Reaves interfered. Angry words followed, blows were struck, and a knife suddently was produced and the cutting followed. Mr. Reaves was arrested immediately afterward by Deputy Sheriff Scott of Oakland, and soon afterward turned over to Sheriff F. F. Hoegemeyer, who was summoned to the scene, and who took Reaves to jail at Columbus. We understand that Reaves will have a preliminary hearing at Columbus the latter part of this week. . . .

The affray started, we are told in Tesch & Hasse's store at that place. All parties soon afterward adjourned to the outside of the store, where the trouble was resumed, with above sad results. It was done so quickly, we have been informed, that parties present did not realize its seriousness until it was all over. . . .

The tragedy is an exceedingly unfortunate, regrettable affair. Both men were of mature age, with families, and the affair is no doubt the result of a sudden outburst of temper. All parties concerned are well known throout this section.

Dr. Havens came to Oakland from the Houston section, and was a native of Mississippi. He leaves a widow and several children, all grown. The remains were buried at Andrews' Chapel Cemetery (this being his last request, we are told). Rev. C. E. Bludworth, local Methodist pastor, officated at the grave.

Mr. Reaves has lived in the Oakland-Sublime section for many years, being engaged in farming and stock raising.

OAKLAND NEWS.

Dr. V. R. Havens, Oakland's beloved physician, died in the Renger Hospital at Halletsville Sunday morning at 6 o'clock. He was in critical condition when taken there, but bore his sufferings like a hero, and was conscious to the last. His wife and two of his children, J. S. Havens and wife of Schulenburg, Mrs. P. M. Wall, her husband, son, V. R. the second, wife and son, V. R. the third, were with him to the end. His remains were prepared for burial and brought to his home Sunday morning. He was laid to rest in Andrew's Chapel Cemetery Monday at 11 o'clock a. m. A large concourse of relatives and friends was present. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. E. Bludworth, assisted by Mr. Raymond Altman, which was very consoling. Dr. Havens was born in Mississippi Feb. 10, 1856 [or 1858?], came to Texas 35 years ago, moved from Houston to Oakland eight years ago, and was a member of the Methodist Church, an active steward for several years. He was a mighty good man, always ministering to those in need, and the weather never got too bad for him. He was always ready to answer every call, was truly a friend in need, and will be greatly missed. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, seven children—Mrs. Faby Kimbrel of Orange, Texas, Mr. J. H. Havens of Elizabeth, La., Mr. R. E. Havens of Eldorado, Ark., Mrs. J. S. Peddy of Beaumont, Texas, Mrs. P. M. Wall of Houston, Texas, Mrs. O. E. Wilcox of Anahuac, Texas, Mr. J. S. Havens of Schulenburg, twenty-one grandchildren and one great-grandson. All his children were present at the funeral except Mr. R. E. Havens of Eldorado, Ark. Our deepest sympathy is extended the bereaved ones.

According to Regena Williamson, Dr. Haven's grave is unmarked.

W. W. HAWKINS

Halletsville Herald, 21 Sep 1893

Obituary.

W. W. Hawkins, the subject of this notice, was born in Woodford County, Ky., on the 29th day of January 1810. Removed with his parents to Missouri in 1812, in which state was his home to the day of his death, though he has spent a considerable portion of his time in Texas with his children during the past several years. Deceased died a widower, though he had been married four times. He was converted and joined the Baptist church about 60 years ago, and continued a consistent and substantial member until his death which occurred at the home of his son, Willis Hawkins in Halletsville, Lavaca county, Texas on the 11th day of September 1893 at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 12 days. He died peacefully and seemingly without pain, surrounded by his two sons and their wives, who ministered cheerfully and tenderly to all of his wants. He was followed to his grave the following day by a large crowd of the leading citizens of the town where, after appropriate funeral services, his remains were laid to rest. Deceased leaves four surviving children, a number of grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his loss to all of whom I would say, he is only gone before and if you by the grace of God are prepared for the better land you will soon meet him to part no more. One of the sons of the deceased resides in Grayson county, Texas and one daughter, Mrs. Calvert, in Henry county, Mo. One square look into the face of our departed brother was sufficient to convince an ordinary observer of his honesty, benevolence, and firmness, which combined with the religion of Jesus makes the true man.
