EDWIN MIKA
Cuero Record, Monday, March 2, 1953
Edwin Mika, about 40, of Hallettsville, who had disappeared from his home Friday evening, was found late Saturday hanging from an oak tree, according to a new report reaching here.
Mika reportedly disappeared after telling his wife he was going out and would be back shortly. Earlier he had told her, however, this time he "would do the job." He had tried to hang himself once before, but was cut down by a neighbor before he could strangle, it was reported.
Sheriff Theo Long and Constable Bill Benger instituted a search party and 400 acres of dense thickest near the Mika home were thoroughly searched.
The party searched until midnight Friday, and started again early Saturday.
Joe Woytek, Jr., an oil worker, who was checking the pressure of two wells and who was unaware that the man was being hunted, discovered Mika's body at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
The victim had apparently stood on a limb of the tree while he tied a double piece of heavy shing cord around his neck and to another limb.
The body was found about one mile north of the Mika home near a fence row.
He was formerly an inmate of the state hospital at San Antonio.
Mika is survived by his wife and six small children.

Mrs. Ludwig Mikes Death Ruled Suicide by J.P.
Suicide was ruled by Justice of the Peace Jerome Darilek of Moulton Sunday Morning in the death of Mrs. Ludwig Mikes who lived about half way between Witting and Moulton.
Mrs. Mikes was found hanging about half way up a windmill tower Sunday morning by her son and daughter. Sheriff Theo Long, who was called to the scene about 7:00 Sunday morning said their mother was under a doctor's care and was in poor health.
According to Sheriff Long, Mrs. Mikes told her son and daughter when they left home to attend a dance in Halletsville that she was going to visit the parents of her late husband. When the children returned, they missed their mother but thought she was spending the night with their grandparents. Mrs. Mikes death came almost two months to the day after the death of her husband, who was also a suicide. He shot himself to death on May 29 in the Lavaca river bottom near his home and was the object of a two day search before being found.

Adela Miller Died Friday Night.
Adela, the little 6 year-old daughter of Gus Miller and wife, residents of the Oakland section, died Friday night and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Halletsville Sunday. This little girl, a beautiful child in spite of her infirmities which prevented her from ever taking a step, was bright and cheerful, with one of the most winning, sweetest smiles the writer ever beheld on the face of a child, and was the pet of the household, dearly loved by each and every member of the family. Her affliction was never a bar to cheerfulness, and it was a pleasure to be around her. To the grief-stricken parents the Mercury extends its heartfelt sympathy.

Hallettsville Tribune, 27 Aug 1937, page 1, column 6
SUBLIME FARMER STABS BROTHER-IN-LAW TO DEATH
In a quarrel over some horses Webb Brooks stabbed his brother-in-law, John Miller, to death on his farm at Sublime. Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.
The killer, confined in a cell at the county jail, told calmly how the murder occurred:
"I had a horse inside a fence and John Miller's horse broke through it. I tried to get his horse out and fix the fence. He was picking cotton a short distance away and heard me and came to where I was. I asked him if he wouldn't take his horse away but he became angry and told me I had no business having a horse there. I told him I did, that I had rented the land. Then he began cursing me. This made me mad and I cursed him back. Then he bent over to pick up a club and when I saw him do this I grabbed him around the neck and stabbed him in the back. He hollered so I let him go and he ran about 200 yards and fell."
Stabbed Him In the Back.
The only eye-witness to the killing was "Dobbs" Miller, son of the slain man, who gave a different story to the sheriff.
"My father was running from Brooks trying to get away from him and he (Brooks) caught up with him and stabbed him twice in the back," said the son.
When his father fell the boy put him in a car and drove to the house, about 150 yards away, but by the time he got there his father was dead.
The son then notified the sheriff who found Brooks at the home of his father at Sublime, where he had ridden on horseback after the killing.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock from his late home and interment was held at the Pagel Settlement cemetery.
The deceased is survived by his wife and six children, two sons "Dobbs" and Jesse Miller and four daughters.

ELLEN MITCHELL
Shiner Gazette, 23 Jan 1908
Orbituary [sic].
Mrs. Ellen Mitchell departed this life Jan. 7, at 9 p. m.
She was highly respected by both white and colored. She stood well in her community and was a member of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church and president of the Home Mission Society. She was a noble woman and one among the best colored women in Lavaca County. Mr. Mitchell did all in his power, he brought her to S. Bozier’s residence and two of the best physicians in the city were summoned and did their duty but the Supreme Ruler of the universe had summoned her.
Not for the dead in Christ we weep,
Their sorrow is now o’er,
The sea is calm, the tempest past,
On that Eternal shore,
Their peace is sealed, their rest is sure,
Within that better home;
A while we weep and linger here
Then follow to the tomb.
A. D. NORWOOd.

SIMON MITCHELL
Shiner Gazette, 13 Apr 1904
A KILLING IN SHINER.
A Quarrel Between Two Negroes Ends in the Death of One.
Last Saturday evening about 2 o’clock the crowd in the vicinity of the White Front saloon were startled by five or six pistol shots fired in rapid succession. Upon investigation Simon Mitchell was found lying on his back on the ground just outside the rear of the saloon, dead, with a bullet hole through his neck. Will Barnes, another negro, who did the shooting, surrendered his pistol and submitted to arrest, saying he was forced to do the killing in self-defense. The two had been drinking together when some difficult arose between them, and Mitchell advanced on Barnes with a knife. Barnes drew his pistol and commenced firing with the result as above stated. This is the version of the affair given by Barnes. The row started outside the rear of the saloon, and one of the parties must have retreated into the saloon, as several shots were fired in the saloon, one of which shattered a bottle, passed through a plank passed within a foot of the head of Mr. Henry Buske, the bar-tender, and buried itself in the window facing of a window in the front of the house. The firing was reckless, and several parties in the saloon at the time had narrow escapes.
An inquest was held over the body of Mitchell, after which it was turned over to relatives. He was a man about 60 years old.
Barnes was taken to Halletsville by Marshall Burkett and jailed where the grand jury, which is now in session there, will attend to his case.

Three Men Dead Result of Blow-Out at Goose Creek
Gas Well Brought in With Tremendous Pressure Blew off Connections Killing Two of the Oil Workers Outright – Third Died of Injuries.
The dead:
HERBERT MOORE, Hallettsville.
A. C. COOK, La Porte.
ROBERT BATES, residence unknown.
Three men are dead as the result of a gas well blowout in the Goose Creek oil fields late Tuesday afternoon. Two of the mean were killed outright, while the third died en route Houston on a boat.
The accident happened at a well being drilled by the Simms-Sinclair interests. The well had been brought in as a gasser with a tremendous pressure about noon, and the drilling crew had succeeded in bringing it under control. At 5 o'clock, when the crews were changing, one of the workmen is said to have gone up to the well to test one of the valves. When the valve was opened the pressure was so great that the blowout occurred, resulting in two of the men being blown some distance from the derrick. One man landed in a slush pit, but was dead when reached.
The bodies of the two dead men were brought to Houston in the ambulance of the Houston Undertaking company and taken to the morgue of that company, where they are being held awaiting funeral arrangements. The body of the third man reached the Harrisburg wharf about midnight and was also turned over to the Houston Undertaking company.

Skipworth was walking in front, Morgan just behind him and young Fisk in the rear, when the gun, from some cause unknown, went off, discharging a load of squirrel shot into the temple of Morgan and one shot striking Fisk. Morgan fell immediately and continued insensible until death, which occurred in about an hour and a half. Dr. E. M. Rabb was sent for immediately after the accident and the justice of Precinct No. 3 last night held inquest upon the body. The jury found a verdict that Warren Morgan came to his death by the accidental discharge of a gun in the hand of Riley Skipworth. Morgan leaves a young wife and two small children to mourn his loss. We are informed that he bore the character of an honest, industrious, and good young man.—Herald. |

MARTIN MUCALA
Weimar Mercury, Friday, June 6, 1919
This section was greatly shocked when the sad news reached here Saturday morning that Mr. Martin Mucala had died at his home near Oakland, in Lavaca county. Mr. Mucala was well known in this section. He was born in Johouava, Austria; came to this country with his wife in 1879, settled at Brenham, and a few years later moved near Oakland, where he resided up to the time of his death. His wife preceded him in death a few years ago. After his wife's death he resided with his daughter, miss Vlasta. In his younger days he was a school teacher. After quitting school duties, he took up farming interests.
The funeral took place Sunday at Bila Hora cemetery, a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends attending the last sad rites. Rev. Paul Piepenbrok, Lutheran minister, officiated at the grave.
Mr. Mucala was a highly respected, good man and was a member of the C.S.P.S. and S.P.J.S.T. lodges. He was in ill health for several months. He was 66 years of age. He leaves two heartbroken children to mourn his death, Vladimir and Miss Vlasta, to whom we extend heartfelt sympathy.

Pickup wreck in Lavaca County kills passenger
YOAKUM - One person was killed and another injured in a single-pickup wreck just south of Rocky Creek Bridge in Lavaca County on Wednesday afternoon.
Magdaline Muras, 65, of Hallettsville was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:30 p.m. with Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Traymer Woytek conducting the inquest. The body was taken to the Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville.
Muras was the passenger in a 1996 Nissan pickup being driven by Cleo Muras, 70, of Hallettsville.
He was taken to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, where a hospital spokesperson said he was admitted into surgery. No update was available on his condition at 6:15 p.m.
The wreck was reported at 1:39 p.m. with Department of Public Safety Trooper Joel Johnson of the Hallettsville office responding and in charge of the investigation. The location was 5.5 miles south of Hallettsville on Alternate U.S. Highway 77.
"The pickup was traveling south on the highway when it left the southbound (right) side of the road," Johnson said. "The vehicle traveled down a ditch and then hit a tree coming to rest. There was no sign of braking or evasive action."
Johnson said there was no immediate evidence of a traffic violation, no citation has been issued and the wreck is still under investigation. The DPS Teletype reported the driver said that he had blacked out and did not know what happened. Trooper Elizabeth Abbott and a Lavaca County Sheriff's deputy assisted at the scene.

H. B. MYERS DEAD
Relatives and friends of this section were apprised Saturday of the death of Mr. H. B. Myers, a former citizen of the Shimek community, who moved a few months ago to the vicinity of Floresville, together with his bevoted[sic] wife, to make their home with their son, John Myers. Mr. Myers’ death was not unexpected. He had been ill for many months, suffered a great deal, and doubtless death to him was a relief. The remains were buried at Fairview, near Floresville, Sunday. In the death of Mr. Myers many citizens of this section lost one of their best beloved, truest friends. He had lived here for many years and was known to practically everyone as one of the truest, noblest men our county has ever produced. Honest, upright, unswerving in his ideals of right and wrong, true as steel to his friends, he won for himself a warm spot in the hearts of everyone who knew him. “Uncle Bing,” as he was familiarly known to his friends, was one of Nature’s noblemen in every sense of the term, and his death is deeply and sincerely deplored throughout Colorado county and wherever he was known. A grand good character has gone to his last reward, and in his death our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the bereaved family, relatives and friends.
